ONLINE TAN REGISTRATION/TAN CARD

The Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number, or TAN, is a 10-digit number made up of letters and numbers. All people who are in charge of deducting or collecting the tax are needed to get this number.

Under Section 203A of the Income Tax Act of 1961, the IT Department gives out the numerical number. All TDS reports must include it.

WHY IS TAN NECESSARY?

Everyone needs a TAN because Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) or Tax Collected at Source (TCS) returns cannot be accepted by TIN facilitation offices without it. If TAN is not written on the challan, the bank will not accept it.

If you don’t ask for a TAN or don’t include the 10-digit alphanumeric number on certain documents, like TDS/TCS returns, e-TDS/e-TCS returns, TDS/TCS certificates, and TDS/TCS payment challans, you could be fined Rs.10,000.

WHO CAN REGISTER FOR A TAN CARD OR REGISTER FOR A TAN?

Any individual or organisation required to deduct or collect tax at source on behalf of the Income Tax department must apply for and obtain a 10-digit alphanumeric TAN.

WHO PROVIDES TAN CARDS?

The Income Tax Department has delegated this authority to NSDL, which issues TAN cards on behalf of the IT department and under the supervision of CBDT.

  • The TAN number is unique and valid for a lifetime.

  • Likewise, the tax recipient may use this TDS certificate as evidence of tax payment in any type of dispute.
  • All tax documents must include the TAN.
  • Even if a person forgets their TAN number after obtaining it, they can retrieve it by visiting the NSDL website and selecting “Know your TAN” from the drop-down menu.
